Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (EWST)

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave therapy?

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a new, non-surgical treatment which uses shockwaves to treat chronic painful conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

Simply put, it works by delivering targeted impulses through specific damaged tissues. This process increases the blood flow within the specific area, helping to stimulate cell regeneration, promoting recovery and decreasing the causes of pain bringing relief and reducing discomfort.

  • Connective tissue pain or degeneration
  • Muscle and Joint pain and injuries
  • Morton’s Neuromas

Frequently Asked Questions

We usually offer extracorporeal shockwave therapy as part of a comprehensive therapeutic plan for recovery or pain relief. Individual sessions are priced depending on your individual needs – contact us today to book your first consultation.

At the start of your first shockwave therapy session, one of our highly trained practitioners will work with you to identify the exact area of pain ready for treatment. Then a gel-like substance, like the gel used in ultrasound scans, is applied to the area to promote the process.

The extracorporeal shockwave therapy probe is then prepared, and pressed on the affected area, enabling shockwaves to be delivered precisely and directly through the skin. The shockwaves spread inside the injured tissue as a “radial” wave.

These radial shockwaves initiate an inflammation-like response in the injured tissue that is being treated, and prompts the body to respond naturally by increasing blood circulation, the number of blood vessels and therefore metabolism in the injured tissue. This is what helps to support the healing process.

Shockwave therapy, like physiotherapy and sports massage, offers a great deal of benefits and pain relief. During sessions you may feel some discomfort, and this depends on how much pain you usually feel in the area.

The shockwaves are felt as pulses which are a little uncomfortable but not painful. Typically your first treatment will start with a low level of intensity and increase this to a point where you feel comfortable.
